Lake Beversee in Bergkamen-Rünthe was formed by land subsidence resulting from former coal mining and, together with its adjacent wetlands, has developed into a habitat of special conservation value for rare animal and plant species.
The nutrient-rich lake, which covers about nine hectares, features distinct siltation zones with underwater plants, extensive carpets of floating-leaf plants—which cover about a quarter of the water’s surface—as well as reed beds consisting of cattails, reed grass, marsh iris, rushes, and sedges.
