ART HOUSE - CITY HALL
CANTWO’s work plays with the identity of a central location. The striking neon sign reading “RATHAUS” is mounted on the facade of the Bergkamen City Hall. The artist has affixed a precise vinyl lettering design directly below it. It appears as a drop shadow of the existing letters. Through this addition, the viewer reads the word “ART-HAUS.” The administrative building is thus symbolically reinterpreted as a place of art.
Graffiti and Urban Society
The work represents a new connection between the city administration and graffiti culture. Bergkamen uses this artistic intervention as a sign of mutual appreciation. For decades, the city has strongly identified with art in public spaces. The “Art-Haus” project continues this tradition in a contemporary way. It highlights the diversity of the city’s neighborhoods and connects people with their immediate surroundings.
Networking in the Digital Space
The logo on City Hall serves as the starting point for a citywide art project from 2023. Various facade projects were combined into a new overarching concept. A QR code on the on-site information signs directs visitors directly to a digital map on Google Maps. This makes it easy for interested visitors to find the various artworks on foot or by bike. All locations are accessible to people with disabilities. In this way, functional walls are transformed into experiential art spaces that transcend geographical boundaries within the city.
