The Earth Pyramid

There is a unique work of art on Town Hall Square in Bergkamen. It is Timm Ulrichs’ Earth Pyramid, created in 1978. On the surface, all you can see is a square stone slab. This slab is exactly one meter long and one meter wide. An inscription lists the coordinates of the location and the height of the work: 6,364,416 meters.

A Pyramid into the Depths

Well-known pyramids soar high into the sky. Timm Ulrichs’ work reverses this principle. The stone slab on the ground forms the base. From there, the structure descends steeply downward. Its imaginary apex lies exactly at the center of the Earth. The pyramid is thus as deep as the radius of our planet. The artwork connects our location directly to the very core of the world.

The World Beneath Our Feet

Bergkamen is a mining town. Beneath its streets lie many tunnels and shafts. There, miners worked deep underground. They brought coal from the darkness into the light. With his work, Timm Ulrichs commemorates this hidden underground architecture. The artwork draws our gaze away from the surface. It makes the vast space beneath our feet tangible to the imagination.
