Gizem Erdem created this mural in October 2023 for the Youth Art School in Bergkamen. The artist lives in Cologne and works as a freelance illustrator. In her work, she often uses bold colors and abstract forms. She frequently designs posters and album covers for the music industry. A central theme of her work is women’s perspectives on the world. She combines digital designs with traditional painting on building facades.

The Artistic Design

The artwork on Pestalozzistraße displays typical characteristics of Erdem’s style. At the center is a human figure, composed of many individual lines and shapes. The various layers and textures lend the image great depth. Here, Erdem plays with the effects of light and shadow on the wall surface. The motif appears dynamic and changes depending on the viewer’s perspective.

Context and Significance

This work was created as part of the Art-Haus project, in which contemporary art enhances the cityscape of Bergkamen. The artist chose colors and forms that complement the creative work taking place at the school. The building itself becomes a work of art through the mural. It is intended to invite young people to discover their own creativity. The design highlights the role of the youth art school in the public space. This creates a direct connection between the architecture and the local up-and-coming artists. The artwork is now an integral part of the city’s urban art trail.
