Bergkamen Scales

Four colorful steles mark the paths leading to the center of Bergkamen. Artists Dirk and Maik Löbbert created the work in 2005. It consists of four poles located at various roundabouts. The poles look like giant measuring rods. They symbolize wide-open city gates. These gates welcome all visitors to the city.

A Meeting Point in the Sky

The angle of the poles follows a precise plan. If the stelae were extended upward, they would meet in the air. This intersection point is exactly 287 meters above ground level. It is located precisely above the market square. There, a brass plaque marks the geographic center of the city. The artwork thus connects the access roads directly to the heart of Bergkamen.

Colors of the Neighborhoods

Each measuring rod has its own color. The design pays homage to the districts of Rünthe, Oberaden, Weddinghofen, and Overberge. These were once independent municipalities. Today, together with the Mitte and Heil districts, they form the city of Bergkamen. The colorful steles symbolize the city’s history and the unity of its residents.

Light at Night

The scales glow in the darkness. In winter, they shine from dusk until midnight. In summer, the lights stay on until 1:00 a.m. They are located at the Weddinghofer, Oberadener, Rünther, and Overberger Gates, guiding people to the city center.
