Mother with Child
A group of figures carved from light-colored stone stands on Kurt-Schumacher-Platz. The artwork depicts a mother with three small children. The figures are made of white Untersberg marble. The structure used to be a fountain. The artist Else Montag created the work.
A Gift for the Mine
The sculpture arrived in Bergkamen in 1953. The Maximilianshütte from Bavaria donated it to the Grimberg mine. At that time, the mine in Bergkamen belonged to the Bavarian company. The artwork was a symbol of the bond between the steelworks and the mining industry.
Identical Sculptures in Other Locations
This group of sculptures is not unique to Bergkamen. The artist created identical works for other locations. The same motifs can be found in Sulzbach-Rosenberg and Maxhütte-Haidhof. Both locations are in the Upper Palatinate. The sculptures thus connect the various sites of the former company.
The Significance of the Work
Else Montag sought to express certain values through the fountain. A mother’s love and concern for her children are at the center of the piece. The artist described her work as a fusion of beauty and aesthetics. The fine marble lends the figures a dignified appearance. The depiction of the mother radiates calm and protection.
