BSP Network Map
The artwork “Netzkarte (BSP)” by Rochus Aust was created in 2009 and 2010. It is located at Platz von Gennevilliers in Bergkamen. This installation is the second part of the “subport bergkamen” project. It complements the fictional airport in the pedestrian zone.
Time Instead of Kilometers
The map depicts cities in Germany and around the world as points of light on the ground. The arrangement does not follow conventional geography. The distances are based on travel time. This form of representation is called tempography. As a result, distant metropolises appear to be right next door, while familiar places in the region seem far away.
The Fictional Airport
The artwork explores the choice of transportation. Bilbao can be reached faster by plane than the neighboring city of Iserlohn can be reached on foot. The “subport” serves as a symbolic gateway to the world right in the middle of the city. It connects Bergkamen with places like Tokyo, Berlin, or Rome. People feel at home in the global village. At the same time, they lose touch with their immediate neighborhood.
Light in the Night
The installation activates daily at dusk. The projections remain illuminated until midnight. The concept is based on an idea by Heinz Friedl. The illuminated map makes the connection between Bergkamen and the world visible to passersby. The work invites viewers to reassess their own location.
