The light installation at the Town Hall roundabout has been a fixture of Bergkamen’s cityscape since 2004. Many people jokingly refer to the artwork as the “washing machine drum.” The official title, created by artist Andreas M. Kaufmann, is “No agreement today, no agreement tomorrow.” The work consists of 24 large portraits behind glass. These images depict individuals who have had a significant impact on history or society.
A Work of Art in Flux
The artist views the sculpture as a social process. The portraits do not remain permanently in the column. Once a year, the city replaces one portrait. The citizens of Bergkamen play an active role in determining who is added to the selection. In public discussions, they debate and decide on the new faces. The local community has fought hard to secure this right to have a say. As a result, the artwork serves as a current reflection of contemporary history.
Light and Interaction
The sculpture reveals its full effect in the dark. In winter, the installation is illuminated daily from dusk until midnight. During the summer months, the lights remain on until 1:00 a.m.
