O.T. Water Screen
A unique work of art stands in Bergkamen’s Sister Cities Square. Artist Birgit Hölmer created “Wasserleinwand O.T.” in 2004. During the day, the installation looks like an ordinary fountain. After dark, it transforms into a luminous sculpture of water and light.
A Fountain Within a Fountain
Several water jets rise in a row, forming a liquid wall measuring four by four meters. A projector casts images onto this water. The motifs depict famous fountains from across Europe. Views from Bergkamen’s sister cities also appear. This creates the optical illusion of a fountain within a fountain. The flowing water is transformed by the light into a solid, sculptural form.
Origin of the Work
The work is based on a competition held in 2002. At that time, Birgit Hölmer was a master’s student at the Münster Academy of Fine Arts. Her teacher was the renowned artist Professor Timm Ulrichs. The artwork establishes a direct connection to its location. It visually links Bergkamen with its sister cities around the world.
Show Times
The water wall is in operation from May through the end of October. During this period, the light projections take place every Friday evening from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. During the winter months, the installation is shut down to protect it from frost. During this time, the light art installation is inactive.
