The sculpture group “Schichtwechsel” is located in Bergkamen-Rünthe. Three sculptors created the work in the summer of 1986. Lothar Kampmann, Andrzej Pollo, and Mehmet Uyanik collaborated on the project at that time. It was originally located on Rünther Straße at the corner of Schlägelstraße. Today, this spot is called Platz von Hettstedt. The city of Bergkamen commissioned this artwork. It stands on the edge of a large mining community.
The History of Mining
The monument commemorates the rise of industry. Many people came here to work in the mines. Without these people, the region would not have grown. At the end of the 19th century, many people immigrated from Poland. Starting in the 1960s, workers from Turkey came to Bergkamen. The work honors their contribution to the city’s development. It is a symbol of its industrial history.
Scenes from Home and Work
Each artist designed a separate part of the group. Lothar Kampmann depicts a farewell scene at the mine gate. The miners are about to begin their shift underground. Andrzej Pollo recreated a village well from Silesia. It serves as a reminder of the Polish immigrants’ roots. Mehmet Uyanik chose a motif from Turkish culture. His work reflects a connection to his homeland. All the motifs tell of life between two worlds.
A Symbol of Tolerance
The monument is intended to promote harmony in the city. Mehmet Uyanik wanted to foster understanding among people. His sculpture gives his compatriots a sense of home. They should not feel like strangers in Germany. At the same time, German residents learn about their neighbors’ culture. The work breaks down prejudices. It is an important step toward a life without mental barriers.
A Meeting Place for Everyone
“Schichtwechsel” is now an enduring symbol of integration. It connects the past with the present. The square is a place for encounters. People from diverse backgrounds meet here. The monument reminds us to treat one another with respect. It showcases the strength of a diverse urban community. The work remains an integral part of Bergkamen’s history.
