Bergkamen Harbor Square
Hafenplatz in Bergkamen is located right on the promenade of Marina Rünthe and, with its seating areas right on the water, offers an ideal spot to relax.
Whether you’re a cyclist, a walker, or a visitor—the view of the water invites you to take a break and enjoy the harbor’s special atmosphere. At the same time, the square is a lively gathering place:
Numerous events, such as the Harbor Festival, Wine Tasting by the Water, and the Harbor Fire, regularly make it the center of the action. The large maritime-style building on the square houses not only the tourist information office but also other departments of the city administration. Across the street are the wedding chapel with a view of the harbor and public restrooms.
Right next to Hafenplatz on the promenade, cyclists have free access to an e-bike charging station and a repair shop. Two information kiosks (at Hafenplatz and on the promenade) provide details on upcoming events.

The area around what is now Marina Rünthe has undergone an impressive transformation. Originally, the former industrial port of Rünthe served as a loading port starting in 1939: Coal from the Werne coal mine was initially transported along the Datteln-Hamm Canal, and later building materials, grain, and petroleum products were added. As logistics increasingly shifted to other modes of transport, the port lost its original function and gradually fell into disuse, becoming a brownfield site.
In 1995, a new chapter began: The conversion of the port into a leisure and recreational destination transformed the industrial area into a place with a maritime flair. Today, more than 300 recreational boats and yachts, restaurants, light art installations, and major events such as the Harbor Festival define the character of Marina Rünthe on the Datteln-Hamm Canal. What was once a center of industry has thus become a popular gathering place for visitors, those seeking relaxation, and recreational boating enthusiasts.
